I am deeply saddened by the news of Rich DeVos’ passing. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends. I worked closely with Rich during much of his longstanding relationship with Spectrum Health. I will miss our conversations, not just about health care, but about life. He constantly encouraged me and made me a better person. It was a privilege to call him my friend. I consider Rich one of the key architects of Spectrum Health. His vision, enthusiasm and leadership were important catalysts in bringing about the merger that created our health system. Rich’s generosity helped to establish numerous programs and services at Spectrum Health. He was instrumental in building Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital and made a major commitment to underwrite the child life program at the hospital. He also provided support for Meijer Heart Center, the Richard DeVos Heart & Lung Transplant Program and Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion. Rich often said that his role in the creation and growth of Spectrum Health could be considered the most important endeavor he undertook in life. That is because he understood the importance of excellent health care. He was committed to providing access to high quality care for everyone in this region. Spectrum Health, and all who call West Michigan home, will benefit from his wisdom, vision and generosity for generations to come.
